Steve Jobs Faces Uphill Battle Against Cancer: Experts - Health ...

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Aug. 25 (HealthDay News) ? One of the hallmarks of Steve Jobs? tenure as CEO of Apple Inc. was the secrecy that shrouded products he was about to unveil ? from the iPod to the iPhone to the iPad ? creating tremendous consumer interest.

Jobs? announcement Wednesday night that he was stepping down as the head of the hugely successful technology company he co-founded in a northern California garage 35 years ago was similarly thin on details, although speculation immediately turned to his ongoing health problems.

In a letter to Apple?s board, the 56-year-old Jobs said he ?always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple?s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.?

This much is known about the health of Jobs, a legendarily private man:
Since 2004, he has been fighting a rare form of pancreatic cancer called neuroendocrine cancer. In January, he took his second medical leave from Apple after undergoing a liver transplant for tumors that had spread to that organ.

Pancreatic cancer expert Dr. Craig Devoe, from the department of medicine at North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y., said that ?neuroendocrine tumors are uncommon, with only a few thousand cases a year.?

For those that affect the pancreas, the numbers are even lower with fewer than 1,000 cases a year in the United States. In contrast, there are around 40,000 cases of other pancreatic cancers a year, Devoe said.

Dr. David M. Levi, a professor of clinical surgery, liver and GI transplantation at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said neuroendocrine cancer ?is an unusual tumor. It can arise in a number of places, including the pancreas.? Such tumors can also start in the lungs.

It?s one of the few tumors that can benefit ? to some extent ? from a transplant, Levi said. Jobs? cancer started in the pancreas and then spread to the liver, making the liver transplant an option, Levi said, adding he has treated patients with this type of cancer and done liver transplants.

While the prognosis for neuroendocrine cancer is often better than for the more common type of pancreatic cancer, in which patients generally live less than a year after diagnosis, neuroendocrine cancer ?can also be bad,? Levi said.

Neuroendocrine cancer can return after treatment, Levi explained. And while a liver transplant can be effective, ?it is not as great a picture as we first thought,? he said. ?A lot of these patients who have transplants eventually do recur.?

?The vast majority of patients that have recurrent disease will die of their disease. One of the problems with the [liver] transplant is that now you are on immunosuppressant drugs, and while they keep you from rejection or destroying the liver, the immune system also would have helped deal with tumors,? he said.

Devoe said a liver transplant is a treatment when ?your back?s against the wall,? and isn?t expected to cure neuroendocrine cancer, so very few are done. ?There is still likely disease in lungs or bone or other places,? he said.

?The fact that the disease came back is not surprising,? he said. There are still some treatment options, including chemotherapy and radiation, he added.

These treatments won?t cure the disease, but they may slow its progression, Devoe said. ?It may extend the life of patients. But at this point, your best treatments are behind you and survival may be under a year or two,? he said. ?It?s clearly incurable.?

Doctors don?t really know what causes neuroendocrine tumors. In the past year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved two new drugs for neuroendocrine tumors ? sunitinib and everolimus.

In a commencement address in 2005 to Stanford University graduates, Jobs said: ?No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don?t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.?

Naked slasher attacks elderly tenants; 1 dead

A naked man with a 10-inch kitchen knife went on a rampage in a Washington Heights building Tuesday afternoon, stabbing four people, including two senior citizens, police said.

Ignacio Reyes-Collazo, an 81-year-old who lived in the building for decades, was killed in the stabbing spree.

Neighbors described the knife-wielding suspect, Christian Falero, 23, as mentally unstable. He was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and robbery.

Jackie Rowe-Adams, who lives on the same floor as Falero, said she saw the accused killer on several occasions in the elevator and suspected he was in need of medication for psychological issues.

The unexplained attack unfolded at about 4:10 p.m., when Falero, a resident of the fifth floor, punched a 22-year-old woman in the face.

He then allegedly grabbed the knife and went door-to-door on the building's second floor, slashing elderly residents as they answered his knock.

Shortly after the slashing rampage, police found Falero naked on a nearby street.

Reyes-Collazo was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital with stab wounds to his face and chest.

His 75-year-old wife was also stabbed multiple times. She was taken to Harlem Hospital, where she was expected to survive.

Also injured was a 60-year-old woman in critical condition after being stabbed in the eye and an 85-year-old woman in stable condition with multiple slash wounds. Another woman was also injured.

The suspect, Falero, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

He was at St. Luke's Hospital undergoing psychological evaluation Tuesday night.

It's not clear if Falero's injuries were self-inflicted.

NLP Rapport Building Techniques | Self Improvement Articles and Tips

Earlier we discussed the importance of rapport and how NLP can be used to establish rapport and build stronger relationships. Establishing rapport can be accomplished by matching and then mirroring another person?s expressions. This might include matching and mirroring the other person?s gestures, breathing, their tone of voice, etc.

The skill of building rapport can be utilized in practically any area of life. While it can certainly be helpful in the world of business, it can also be beneficial in your personal life as well, as you seek to develop stronger relationships with friends and family members. For example, when in a conflict with your spouse or significant other you might seek to build rapport in order to reach an amenable conclusion to the disagreement. It is also essential to learn how to establish rapport in order to learn how to avoid conflicts, get along with others and overall, have a more enjoyable life.

NLP Rapport Building Techniques: Using Mirroring and Matching Methods
Mirroring and matching is an excellent way to begin building rapport with others. In order to understand how to make the most of this method, it should be understood that in most cases, people tend to act, sound, look and even move like one another. Generally speaking, we notice these similarities at an unconscious level and make an effort in order to get along with others.

Therefore, mirroring and matching is actually a completely natural method that is often not difficult to utilize.

NLP Rapport Building Techniques: Using Observation
One way that you can get started using this method is by observing people that you already feel comfortable with. By carefully observing these people you will likely notice that they already display behaviors that are quite similar. It should be noted that such similar actions do not occur on a deliberate level, but instead occur at the unconscious level in order to establish rapport.

There are many different ways in which we can establish rapport by using the mirroring and matching technique. For example, we can match another?s voice, their posture, even their facial expressions. As an easy example, suppose you are talking to someone and they tilt their head to one side or the other. You might then tilt your head in the opposite directions, similar to a mirror. Another example, would be using the same hand gestures that the other person uses in order to establish rapport.

Of course, it should be noted that you must be circumspect regarding the way that you seek to mirror and match the other person. You can go overboard. You should not seek to imitate every gesture, every tone or every facial expression. Doing so can quickly become annoying to the other person and will cause you to fail at building rapport. Instead, pay attention to the gestures and expressions that are used whenever the other person is speaking and then utilize those gestures or expressions when you frame your response.

Also, it is important to make sure that there is a bit of lag time in between when you match the other person?s movements or gestures. For example, if you notice that the other person has tilted their head, you would not tilt your head immediately. You would instead give it a moment or so and then match the movement.

Matching your breathing rate to the other person can also be quite helpful when you wish to build rapport. In order to make use of this method you will need to pay attention to the other person?s breathing rate and then match it. Note that in most cases, people breathe out when they speak.

You can watch for this and then breathe out whenever the other person begins to speak. When the other person draws in a breath you will then draw in a breath as well.

It should also be kept in mind that while this technique can prove to be helpful in terms of resolving conflict and even avoiding it, you do want to take care to ensure that you do not mirror or match expressions, tones or gestures that are inappropriate. For example, if you are in a heated argument with another person, it would not be appropriate to match an escalating voice. Instead, you want to make sure that you keep your voice calm and neutral. If you match the aggressive or angry gestures in this type of situation, it will likely only incite the other person further.

The mirroring and matching technique can be utilized in a variety of different day to day circumstances in order to help you build stronger relationships.
