Major League Gaming, the largest streaming competitive gaming league, reported on Wednesday it had seen a tremendous spike in viewers over the past year, with numbers that rival television programming.
More than 11.7 million people watched Major League Gaming?s four seasonal tournaments via its website in 2012, the company reported Wednesday. These viewers consumed more than 15 million hours of video across those four weekend-long tournaments.
The MLG seasonal championship tournaments attract players from around the world to compete in StarCraft II, League of Legends and Mortal Kombat competitions. Players can garner thousands of dollars for winning and placing in these tournaments.
The most recent tournament, MLG?s Fall Championship, was held in Dallas on Nov. 2 through Nov. 4. In addition to the above games, players fought it out in Halo 4 days before it was released. MLG gave out $180,000 in prizes in Dallas, and saw 1,500 entrants across all games. About 4.8 million people tuned in online to watch them play over that weekend.
?MLG?s 334% growth in live online audience this year surpasses growth demonstrated by traditional sports. This is a testament to the mainstream demand for competitive gaming and power of live streaming,? said Sundance DiGiovanni, Major League Gaming CEO, said in a press release. ?The last two years have been the largest in MLG?s 10-year history with over 636% growth in live viewers. I only expect that growth to continue in 2013.?
According to Comscore, 85% of MLG?s streaming audience is male, 60% are between 18-49, and 40% are affluent, making more than $100,000 per year.
